The General

Silent and Early Cinema Landmarks

The General is a 1926 American silent comedy film directed by and starring Buster Keaton alongside co-director Clyde Bruckman, dramatizing a fictionalized version of the real Civil War-era Great Locomotive Chase through an extended train-based chase sequence built around elaborate physical stunts performed by Keaton himself. The film was a costly production for its time and performed only modestly at the box office on release, a commercial disappointment that damaged Keaton's standing within the studio system. Critical opinion of the film shifted dramatically in later decades, and it is now widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements of the silent film era, with director Orson Welles calling it the greatest comedy, the greatest Civil War film, and possibly the greatest film ever made; it was selected for the inaugural class of the National Film Registry in 1989.

FAQs

Was The General made in 1926 or 1927?

This atlas gives 1926; the Library of Congress registry lists 1927.

This atlas dates The General to 1926, but not every authoritative listing agrees. The Library of Congress National Film Registry lists the film under a year of release of 1927, and records 1989 as the year it was inducted into the registry. A reader comparing sources should expect to see both years.
