One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a 1975 American film directed by Milos Forman, adapted from Ken Kesey's 1962 novel of the same name, following a newly admitted patient at a psychiatric hospital who challenges the rigid authority of the ward's head nurse and encourages his fellow patients toward greater self-assertion. The film contrasts the patient's disruptive vitality against the institution's quiet, procedural control, building toward a confrontation between the two. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest became only the second film to win all five major Academy Awards, for picture, director, actor, actress and adapted screenplay, and it remains widely regarded as one of the defining American films of the 1970s.
