Faust is a 1926 German silent film directed by F.W. Murnau, adapting the legend of a scholar who makes a pact with the demon Mephisto, starring Emil Jannings as Mephisto and Gosta Ekman as Faust. Made with an unusually large budget and elaborate special-effects photography for its time, including extensive use of double exposure and forced perspective to depict Mephisto's supernatural powers, it was Murnau's last German film before he moved to Hollywood to make Sunrise. It is widely regarded by film historians as one of the visual high points of German Expressionist silent cinema.
