Diablo

Interactive and Networked Media Landmarks

Diablo is an action role playing hack and slash video game developed by Blizzard North and published by Blizzard Entertainment in 1996, set in and beneath the dark fantasy town of Tristram, where the player descends through randomly generated dungeon levels to confront the demon lord Diablo. Its combination of fast, simple combat, randomized loot and randomly generated levels proved enormously influential, popularizing the action role playing game as a mass market genre and establishing a template that later games in the genre, including its own sequels, would build on.
