Dad's Army is a British television sitcom about the United Kingdom's Home Guard during the Second World War, written by Jimmy Perry and David Croft and broadcast on BBC1 from 31 July 1968 to 13 November 1977. It ran for nine series and 80 episodes, and also produced a 1971 feature film, a stage show and a radio version based on the television scripts. The Home Guard platoon at its center consists mainly of local volunteers too old or otherwise ineligible for regular military service, and the series regularly drew audiences of 18 million viewers. Its cast included Arnold Ridley, John Laurie, Arthur Lowe, John Le Mesurier, Ian Lavender and Clive Dunn, several of whom had served in the British Army in real life.
