Sid Meier is a game designer and programmer who co-founded the studio MicroProse in 1982 and is best known as the creator of the Civilization series of turn-based strategy games, first released in 1991, in which players guide a civilization from antiquity toward the modern era through exploration, diplomacy, technology and warfare. The Civilization franchise has continued across multiple sequels and expansions for decades and is widely regarded as one of the most influential and enduring strategy game series ever made. Meier's name is credited in the titles of several of his games, an unusual practice in the industry that reflects his standing as a recognized individual creative figure in video game design.
