Civilization is a 1991 turn-based strategy video game designed by Sid Meier and published by MicroProse, in which the player guides a chosen historical civilization from antiquity into the modern era through city founding, technological research, diplomacy and warfare against rival civilizations. The game's scope, condensing thousands of years of human history into a single playable strategy game, was unusual for its time. Civilization is widely regarded as a landmark of the turn-based strategy genre and launched a long-running series of sequels.
