Citizenfour

Citizenfour is a 2014 documentary directed by Laura Poitras, built around her communications with Edward Snowden beginning in January 2013 and their first in person meeting in a Hong Kong hotel room that June, where Snowden revealed evidence of mass surveillance programs run by the United States National Security Agency. The film documents Snowden's disclosures as they happen and follows the beginning of his flight from the United States toward eventual asylum in Russia. Citizenfour won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, and the surveillance practices it exposed were later cited by the European Court of Human Rights in a 2018 ruling that a British intelligence agency's bulk data collection had violated human rights protections.
