Bone (comics)

Print, Comics and Photojournalism Landmarks

Bone is a comic book series created by Jeff Smith, self-published through his own Cartoon Books from July 1991 to June 2004 across fifty five issues, with a brief run at Image Comics partway through. It follows three cartoonish cousins from Boneville who are exiled into a valley of humans and dragons, where a comic adventure gradually darkens into an extended fantasy epic. The series won ten Eisner Awards and eleven Harvey Awards, and a 2004 Time critic called it the best all-ages graphic novel yet published, with reviewers repeatedly comparing its scope to The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter; it is frequently cited as proof that a long-form comic story with genuine literary structure could succeed both artistically and commercially.
