Batman #1

Print, Comics and Photojournalism Landmarks

Batman #1 is a comic book published by DC Comics on April 24, 1940, written by Bill Finger and drawn by Bob Kane, launching Batman's own ongoing series less than a year after his debut in Detective Comics #27 proved popular enough to justify a dedicated title, a distinction until then reserved for Superman. The issue collected four stories that introduced major figures in Batman's rogues gallery, including two Joker stories along with the first appearances of Hugo Strange and Catwoman. Finger's writing went uncredited for decades despite his central role in shaping the character, and the issue has since become one of the most valuable comic books in existence, with a near mint copy selling for more than two million dollars at auction in 2021.
