Alien is a 1979 science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott, written by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, and produced for 20th Century-Fox by Brandywine Productions. It follows the commercial spaceship crew of the Nostromo, led by Warrant Officer Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, who investigate a derelict alien vessel and are hunted one by one aboard their own ship by a deadly extraterrestrial creature. The creature and its environments were designed by Swiss artist H. R. Giger, and the film's slow-building dread and industrial, working-class setting made it enormously influential on later science fiction and horror filmmaking.
