EastEnders is a British television soap opera created by Julia Smith and Tony Holland that has been broadcast by the BBC since 1985, set in the fictional London borough of Walford and centered on the residents of Albert Square and the surrounding streets, pubs and market. Broadcast several times a week in continuing serial form since its premiere, it has become one of the BBC's most watched and longest running programs, known for combining everyday domestic storylines with socially engaged plots addressing issues such as domestic violence, addiction and mental health. It remains one of the defining and most commercially significant programs in the history of British television.
