All in the Family is an American television sitcom created by Norman Lear that premiered on CBS in 1971, centered on Archie Bunker, a working-class bigot in Queens, New York, and the friction between his views and those of his more progressive family members. The series broke sharply with prior American sitcom convention by addressing racism, sexism, and other contentious social and political topics directly through Archie's own prejudiced remarks, rather than avoiding such subjects. All in the Family became the highest-rated television program in the United States for five consecutive seasons and is widely credited with permanently changing the range of subject matter American television comedy would address.
