American television writer and producer (1922 to 2023), whose socially conscious sitcoms reshaped American television in the 1970s. His 1971 series All in the Family, centered on the bigoted but complex Archie Bunker, was among the first American sitcoms to directly confront issues such as racism, sexism and the Vietnam War in a comedic format.
