Stargate

Film-Originated Franchises

Stargate is an American military science fiction media franchise that began with a 1994 feature film directed by Roland Emmerich and co-written with Dean Devlin. The film centers on a mysterious ring shaped device, the Stargate, that opens a wormhole allowing near instantaneous travel across vast distances of space. The property expanded far beyond its original film through television, most successfully with Stargate SG-1, which ran from 1997 to 2007, followed by the spin-off series Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe. The television-led franchise ran for more than fifteen years altogether before winding down, though a revival was announced in 2025. Ownership of the franchise now rests with Amazon MGM Studios.
