Pirates of the Caribbean

Pirates of the Caribbean is an American fantasy adventure franchise from Walt Disney Pictures, developed from the company's own Pirates of the Caribbean theme park attraction and beginning with the film The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003. The series centers on the eccentric pirate captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, and follows him and a rotating cast of allies and adversaries across five films through supernatural pirate lore involving cursed treasure, sea monsters and immortal captains. The Curse of the Black Pearl was itself a rare example of a successful film based directly on a theme park ride, and its commercial success led to four further films released between 2006 and 2017, alongside novels, comic books and video games, with the series' films together grossing more than 4.5 billion dollars worldwide, and its sweeping Hans Zimmer composed theme music becoming closely associated with the character across the films.
