Pac-Man is a media franchise built on the 1980 maze arcade video game developed and published by Namco in Japan, with North American distribution by Midway Manufacturing beginning that same year. The original game has players guide the title character through an enclosed maze, eating dots and avoiding four colored ghosts, with power pellets occasionally letting the character turn and eat the ghosts instead. The franchise has since expanded across decades of sequels and remakes on nearly every gaming platform, into television series, merchandise, music, and film appearances, and Pac-Man became Namco's official mascot; a 2009 Guinness World Records survey found that ninety four percent of the United States population could recognize the character, and the franchise's various versions had grossed more than twelve billion dollars in revenue by 2016.
