Mortal Kombat

Video-Game-Originated Franchises

Mortal Kombat is a media franchise built on the fighting video game series originally developed by Midway Games, whose first arcade game was released in August 1992; after Midway's bankruptcy, Warner Bros. Entertainment acquired the development team and established NetherRealm Studios to continue it. The franchise has since expanded into action-adventure games, comic book series, card games, animated and live-action films, an animated television series, and live touring stage shows. It has become the best-selling fighting game franchise in the world, with more than one hundred million copies sold, and ranks among the highest grossing media franchises of all time.
