Dragon Ball is a Japanese manga and anime franchise created by Akira Toriyama, beginning as a manga series serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1984 to 1995, following the adventures of Son Goku from childhood through adulthood as he trains in martial arts, searches for magical wish granting orbs called Dragon Balls, and defends Earth against increasingly powerful enemies. The manga's roughly 42 collected volumes have sold more than 260 million copies worldwide, and its anime adaptations, Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, together with numerous theatrical films and video games, have made it one of the best selling manga series and most recognized anime franchises in history. Dragon Ball Z in particular is widely credited with introducing many Western audiences to anime during its television syndication in the 1990s and 2000s, and its visual conventions, including drawn out power up sequences and characters achieving new transformed forms in battle, have become widely imitated tropes across the wider shonen action genre.
