Call of Duty

Call of Duty is an American video game franchise published by Activision, beginning as a World War II first person shooter developed by Infinity Ward and released in 2003, before expanding under multiple development studios, including Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games, into settings spanning the Cold War, contemporary and near future warfare and outer space. The 2007 installment Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is widely credited with popularizing the modern military shooter genre and establishing conventions, including perk based multiplayer progression and killstreak rewards, that shaped a generation of competitive online shooters, and the franchise's annual release schedule and consistently high sales have made it one of the highest grossing entertainment franchises of any medium, with lifetime revenue estimated at more than 30 billion dollars. Its free to play battle royale spin off, Call of Duty: Warzone, launched in 2020, drew tens of millions of players and extended the franchise's reach into the broader battle royale genre alongside titles such as Fortnite and PUBG.
