SpongeBob SquarePants

Television-Originated Franchises

SpongeBob SquarePants is an American media franchise built around the animated comedy television series created by marine science educator Stephen Hillenburg for Nickelodeon, which premiered on July 17, 1999, after Hillenburg developed the character from an educational comic he had drawn while teaching marine biology. The series follows an anthropomorphic sea sponge and his companions in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom and has run for seventeen seasons, making it the longest running American children's animated series. The franchise has grown to include four theatrical feature films, two streaming films, a Broadway musical, comic books, video games, and the spin-off series Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years and The Patrick Star Show, and had generated more than sixteen billion dollars in merchandising revenue by 2024.
