Game of Thrones

Television-Originated Franchises

Game of Thrones is an American fantasy television franchise produced by HBO, adapted by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss from George R. R. Martin's ongoing novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, the first volume of which was published in 1996. The series, which aired from 2011 to 2019 across eight seasons, follows the noble families of the fictional continent of Westeros as they contend for the Iron Throne while a supernatural threat gathers beyond a great northern wall, and it became one of the most watched and most awarded television series of its era, winning a record number of Primetime Emmy Awards for a scripted series. Its large ensemble cast, willingness to kill major characters without warning and elaborate production, filmed across multiple countries, set new benchmarks for the scale of prestige television, and the franchise has continued through the prequel series House of the Dragon, beginning in 2022, with further prequel projects developed from Martin's wider fictional history of Westeros.
