An American film and television production and distribution company founded on 5 February 1919 by Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D. W. Griffith, so that leading actors and a director could control their own financial and artistic interests rather than depend on the existing commercial studios. It changed ownership many times over the following century and now operates as a subsidiary of Amazon MGM Studios.
