The international news agency founded in London in 1851 by Paul Julius Reuter, who had earlier used carrier pigeons to bridge a gap in the telegraph line. Selling fast, factual dispatches to newspapers everywhere, Reuters helped invent the wire service model on which the world's press still runs.
