Thomas & Friends is a British media franchise built on The Railway Series, the children's books written by Wilbert Awdry and later his son Christopher Awdry. Television producer Britt Allcroft developed a television adaptation after discovering the books in 1978, and the series premiered on ITV on October 9, 1984, under the title Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends, filmed using scale model trains before switching to computer animation in 2009. The franchise has grown to twenty four television series with more than five hundred eighty episodes, several theatrical films, and two animated reboots, the first of which, Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go, aired from 2021 to 2025.
