The production was an early large-scale showcase for three-strip Technicolor, using the format's wider color range to stage the film's shift from a sepia-toned Kansas to the vivid land of Oz, and its songs, including Over the Rainbow, became enduring standards of American popular music. The film has since become one of the most widely viewed motion pictures in history through decades of television broadcast, and it was among the first films selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1989.
