Formed on 17 April 1924 when the theater magnate Marcus Loew combined Metro Pictures, Samuel Goldwyn's Goldwyn Pictures and Louis B. Mayer's own studio, with Mayer as head of production and Irving Thalberg running the studio floor. From the end of the silent era through the late 1950s, MGM was Hollywood's dominant studio, and its roaring Leo the Lion trademark still opens its films.
