Universal Pictures was founded on 8 June 1912 through a merger of several early motion picture companies, including Independent Moving Pictures, the Powers Motion Picture Company and the New York Motion Picture Company, organized by a group of founders led by Carl Laemmle. It is the oldest surviving film studio in the United States and the oldest member of Hollywood Big Five studios, having operated from its founding as a vertically integrated company controlling production, distribution and exhibition in the same corporate structure, the model that defined the studio system era.
