Wolfgang Petersen was a German film and television director, screenwriter and producer, born in Emden, German Reich, on 14 March 1941 and died on 12 August 2022. His career ran from 1953 to 2016, and his international breakthrough was the war film Das Boot in 1981, which earned him Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.
