Tom Hooper, born Thomas George Hooper in 1972, is a British Australian director, producer and screenwriter who began his career directing British television drama for the BBC and ITV in the 1990s, including Elizabeth I and the mini series John Adams, for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing. He moved into feature films with The King's Speech in 2010, winning the Academy Award for Best Director, and went on to direct the large scale musical adaptations Les Miserables in 2012 and Cats in 2019, as well as the drama The Danish Girl in 2015. While The King's Speech and Les Miserables were critical and commercial successes, Cats was poorly received and won three Golden Raspberry Awards, after which Hooper shifted toward commercial directing work.
