Simon Ritter von Stampfer (26 October 1792, though some sources give 1790, to 10 November 1864) was an Austrian mathematician, surveyor and inventor, born at Windisch-Matrei in the Archbishopric of Salzburg, today Matrei in Osttirol in Tyrol, and died in Vienna. His most famous invention is the stroboscopic disk, which has a claim to be the first device to show moving images. A similar device, the phenakistiscope, was developed almost simultaneously in Belgium, so priority for the invention of the moving-image disk is shared between the two inventors rather than settled. This entry records him for his place in the pre-cinema history of animated pictures.
