Ousmane Sembène was a Senegalese film director, producer and writer, born in Ziguinchor, Casamance, then part of French West Africa, in 1923, who died on 9 June 2007. The Los Angeles Times considered him one of the greatest authors of Africa, and he has often been called the father of African film. He was active from 1956 to 2003, and his notable films include Borom Sarret of 1963, Black Girl of 1966 and Mandabi of 1968. Within this atlas Ousmane Sembène is credited as the director of Xala and Black Girl.
