Louie Psihoyos, born April 15 1957 in Dubuque, Iowa, is an American photographer and documentary film director. He built his early career as a photojournalist, including work for National Geographic, before moving into underwater photography and ocean conservation advocacy. In 2005 he co-founded the Oceanic Preservation Society. He directed the 2009 documentary The Cove, about dolphin hunting in Taiji, Japan, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 82nd Academy Awards in 2010. He went on to direct other documentaries including Racing Extinction (2015), The Game Changers (2018), Mission: Joy (2021) and You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment (2024).
