Leonardo Favio, born Fuad Jorge Jury on 28 May 1938, was an Argentine filmmaker, singer and actor who died in Buenos Aires on 5 November 2012. He is regarded as one of Argentina's best film directors and one of the country's most enduring cultural figures. He was already an established director when his singing career began in the mid-1960s, and his first two features, Chronicle of a Boy Alone and El Romance del Aniceto y la Francisca, are counted among the best Argentine films. He went on to direct El dependiente (1969), Juan Moreira (1973) and Nazareno Cruz y el Lobo (1975), which remains the highest-grossing Argentine film in the country's history. Forced into exile in 1976 after the start of the last civil-military dictatorship, he returned after democracy was restored, broke a seventeen-year gap in filming with the biopic Gatica, el mono, made the six-hour documentary Perón, sinfonía del sentimiento, and finished with Aniceto (2008). He was also one of the most successful Argentine singers of the 1960s and 1970s.
