Leni Riefenstahl

Leni Riefenstahl was a German filmmaker, photographer, and former actress, born in 1902 and living until 2003, whose technically innovative films made her one of the most influential and most controversial figures in the history of cinema. After an early career as a dancer and actress, she turned to directing, and her two best known works, Triumph of the Will in 1935 and Olympia in 1938, were made in close cooperation with the Nazi government to document its 1934 Nuremberg rally and the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Both films introduced camera techniques, including moving tracking shots, aerial photography, and dramatic editing, that shaped the visual language of documentary and sports filmmaking for decades afterward. Riefenstahl's artistic innovations have never been separable from their propaganda purpose, and she remained a divisive figure for the rest of her life, defending her films as apolitical artistic works while critics and historians identified them as instruments that helped legitimize the Nazi regime to German and international audiences.
