Keisuke Kinoshita

Directors and Filmmakers

Keisuke Kinoshita (1912 to 1998) was a Japanese film director and screenwriter who was far better known at home than abroad, even though contemporaries such as Akira Kurosawa, Kenji Mizoguchi and Yasujiro Ozu are more familiar to international audiences. Critics and the public in Japan loved his work from the 1940s into the 1960s, and his films were noted for sentiment, purity and beauty as well as experiments in technique and subject. He entered the industry in 1933 as a film processor, moved through camera assistant and assistant director, and became a director in 1943 with Port of Flowers. He directed 43 films in his first 23 years and five more after working in television. Carmen Comes Home, Twenty-Four Eyes and The Ballad of Narayama are among his best known titles.
