Josef von Sternberg, born Jonas Sternberg in Vienna on 29 May 1894, was an Austrian-American filmmaker who died on 22 December 1969. His career spanned the transition from the silent to the sound era, and he worked with most of the major Hollywood studios. He is best known for his collaboration with the actress Marlene Dietrich in the 1930s, including The Blue Angel of 1930, and he was active from 1925 to 1957.
