Jean Rouch was a French filmmaker and anthropologist who lived from 31 May 1917 to 18 February 2004 and is considered one of the founders of cinéma vérité in France. His practice as a filmmaker, over more than sixty years in Africa, was characterized by the idea of shared anthropology, and many of his films blur the line between fiction and documentary in a style called ethnofiction. The French New Wave filmmakers hailed him as one of their own, and he co-directed Chronicle of a Summer, which is listed here as a work.
