Jafar Panahi is an Iranian filmmaker and actor, born in Mianeh in East Azerbaijan on 11 July 1960. He is known internationally for his artistic contributions to Iranian cinema after the 1979 Revolution and has been associated with the Iranian New Wave. His work is rooted in neorealism and centered on the lives of women, children and the marginalized, and it constitutes a critical portrait of the social, political and gendered structures of contemporary Iran. He began his career making short films.
