Giuseppe Tornatore

Giuseppe Tornatore is an Italian film director and screenwriter born in 1956 in Bagheria, Sicily, whose work is widely credited with restoring international critical attention to Italian cinema in the late twentieth century. His 1988 film Cinema Paradiso, a nostalgic portrait of a small-town cinema and its projectionist, won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1990 and remains his best known work. He went on to direct Everybody's Fine, The Legend of 1900, Malena and Baaria, building a body of work marked by memory, provincial Sicilian life and sweeping romanticism. Beginning with Cinema Paradiso he formed a long collaboration with composer Ennio Morricone, who scored thirteen of his features. He also won the Silver George for Best Director at the 2007 Moscow International Film Festival for The Unknown Woman.
