Dziga Vertov, born David Abelevich Kaufman in Bialystok, then in the Russian Empire, on 2 January 1896, was a Soviet pioneer of documentary film and newsreel direction as well as a cinema theorist. He died on 12 February 1954, his career ran from 1917 to 1954, and his filming practices and theories influenced the cinema verite movement.
