Dick Irvin Jr.

Journalists and Broadcasters

James Dickinson Irvin III, known as Dick Irvin Jr., is a retired Canadian sports broadcaster and author, born on 4 March 1932. A McGill University graduate and the son of a Montreal Canadiens coach, he began as the club's media liaison and from 1966 worked as colour commentator on Canadiens radio and television broadcasts alongside Danny Gallivan. He also hosted and commentated for Hockey Night in Canada, where his broadcasting career ran from 1966 to 1999 and made him its longest serving member at his retirement, a record since passed by Bob Cole. He called Canadiens radio games from 1976 to 1997 and Montreal Alouettes football for eight seasons. The Hockey Hall of Fame gave him the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award in 1988, and he entered the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2004.
