Claude Lanzmann was a French filmmaker, born in 1925 and died in 2018, best known for the Holocaust documentary Shoah, released in 1985. The film runs nine and a half hours and is built from oral testimony given by Holocaust survivors, witnesses and perpetrators, presented over contemporary rather than historical footage. He is also known for the 2017 documentary Napalm, about a love affair he had with a North Korean nurse while visiting North Korea in 1958. Besides filmmaking, Lanzmann was the chief editor of Les Temps Modernes, a French literary magazine.
