Brigitte Sy, born 26 January 1956, is a French actress and filmmaker who built a long acting career in French cinema before turning to directing. Her directorial debut, Les Mains libres (2010), a drama drawing on her own experience visiting a partner in prison, received critical acclaim on its release in France. Sy's move from performer to director reflects a common path in French film culture, where actors frequently cross into directing mid-career, and her work as a filmmaker has continued to draw on personal and social material since her debut.
