Andrew Jarecki (born March 24, 1963) is an American filmmaker, musician and entrepreneur. He is best known for the Emmy-winning documentary series The Jinx, which examined the life of real estate heir Robert Durst and his connection to several unsolved deaths, and for the documentary film Capturing the Friedmans (2003), an account of a Long Island family engulfed by child sex abuse allegations that earned an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature nomination. His more recent documentary The Alabama Solution (2025), on conditions inside Alabama's prison system, also earned an Academy Award documentary nomination. Before turning to filmmaking, Jarecki graduated from Princeton University in 1985 and co-founded Moviefone, the telephone and online movie-listings service that was sold to AOL in 1999, giving him an unusual path into documentary work by way of the media technology business. His documentaries are known for combining long-form investigative reporting with the narrative pacing of true-crime storytelling.
