Andre de Toth was a Hungarian-born American film director, born in 1913 and died in 2002. He was born and raised in Makó, then part of Austria-Hungary, and took the name Endre Antal Miksa de Toth when he became a United States citizen in 1945. He is best known for directing House of Wax in 1953, a three-dimensional film, even though he had lost an eye at an early age and could not see in 3D himself. That detail makes him an unusual figure in the history of stereoscopic cinema. His directing career ran from 1939 to 1987, and he was married seven times, among his wives the actress Veronica Lake.
