Dont Look Back

Documentary and Nonfiction Film

Dont Look Back is a 1967 American documentary directed by D. A. Pennebaker, following singer Bob Dylan during his 1965 concert tour of England, shot in an observational, fly-on-the-wall style with no narration or staged interviews. The film is widely credited as a foundational work of the direct cinema and cinema verite documentary movements in American filmmaking, and its opening sequence, showing Dylan discarding hand lettered cue cards bearing the lyrics to Subterranean Homesick Blues, is frequently cited as an early precursor to the modern music video. The title is presented without an apostrophe by Pennebaker's own deliberate stylistic choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the title Dont Look Back spelled without an apostrophe?

Director D. A. Pennebaker chose the spelling deliberately, to simplify the language.

The film's original title, Dont Look Back, leaves out the apostrophe by the deliberate choice of director D. A. Pennebaker, who punctuated it this way as an attempt to simplify the language. Many sources have mistaken the spelling for a typographical error and corrected it to Don't Look Back, but the unpunctuated form is Pennebaker's own choice, not an error.
