Steven Spielberg is an American film director and producer whose career, beginning with the television film Duel in 1971 and the theatrical blockbuster Jaws in 1975, helped establish the modern Hollywood summer blockbuster. His films span popular adventure and science fiction, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Jurassic Park, and serious historical drama, including Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan, both of which won him the Academy Award for Best Director. Spielberg co-founded the studio DreamWorks Pictures in 1994 and remains among the most commercially successful and widely recognized directors in film history.
