Saving Private Ryan

Hollywood and English-Language Studio Cinema

Saving Private Ryan is a 1998 American war film directed by Steven Spielberg, written by Robert Rodat, set during the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944. It follows Captain John Miller, played by Tom Hanks, and his squad as they are sent behind enemy lines to find and bring home Private James Francis Ryan after his three brothers are killed in action. Its opening sequence depicting the assault on Omaha Beach was widely praised for its intense, unflinching realism and influenced the visual language of later war films, and Spielberg won the Academy Award for Best Director for the film.
