Robert Redford

Directors and Filmmakers

Robert Redford was an American actor, director, and producer who lived from 1936 to 2025 and became a leading figure of Hollywood's New Wave over more than six decades. His breakthrough roles included Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting, and he later starred in The Great Gatsby, All the President's Men, and Out of Africa. His directorial debut, Ordinary People, won four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director in 1980, and he went on to direct A River Runs Through It, Quiz Show, and The Horse Whisperer. Redford co-founded the Sundance Institute and Sundance Film Festival in 1978, becoming a central figure in supporting independent cinema.
